Pixie Book Review: A Brigit of Ireland Devotional by Mael Brigde
Moon Books – September 1, 2021 | $22.95 Paperback | ISBN 978-1-78904-695-3
I am here with yet another book review folks! I hope to have several more coming up soon (if this brain of mine and my schedule will cooperate, that is). There have been so many great books released recently, that it’s getting hard to keep up!
Ok, enough chit chat, let’s get on with it...
Why Did I Choose “A Brigit of Ireland Devotional” by Mael Brigde?
I received an advanced copy of the book from the publisher, and as it centers around a Goddess I’ve worked closely with as part of my own eclectic little pantheon, I thought I should check it out.
What’s Inside “A Brigit of Ireland Devotional” by Mael Brigde?
This 336-page paperback was obviously a work of love, exploration, and devotion.
Within its pages we follow the author through her own spiritual journey as she gets to know Brigit, develops her own connection with her, and expresses her journey through an extensive collection of poems, prayers, and essays.
She tells us in the introduction that though her understanding of who Brigit is has evolved over the years, she has included works from all phases of her journey.
I really like the fact that she’s done this. Why? Because it shows that every single part of our respective spiritual journeys has value. Even at the beginning, when our understanding is limited, the thoughts and feelings of those times are extremely valid, and are representative of our journey at that moment. Brigde tells us that though her understanding of Brigit has changed over time “The poems, however, stay as they began. To alter them would misrepresent my journey with her.’
The works within this text address Brigit as Goddess, Historical Figure, and Saint...for she is all of them. The histories, myths, and legends regarding all three versions of this magnificent being overlap to such an extent that it is near impossible to separate one from the others. This is one of the few books I’ve come across that acknowledges and accepts that.
Things I’ve put into practice and/or adapted from the book:
There aren’t really any practices in the book, per se, more the book itself is meant to be used as part of one’s practice. There are many poems that spoke to me, as well as some beautiful prayers that may come in handy somewhere down the line.
Brigde states early on that she felt that the act of writing these pieces was in itself an act of devotion to Brigit. I understand this, as I feel that she is often the spark that lights my own creative fires...and I too, have created pieces as an act of devotion. This is something I will continue to do.
Final Thoughts on “A Brigit of Ireland Devotional” by Mael Brigde:
This book is beautifully crafted, and I am so glad that it has crossed my path. If you are interested in or work with any iteration of Brigit, I highly recommend it becoming part of your collection.
